There is a specific moment when Rome takes on a completely different atmosphere. It happens at sunset, when the light grows warmer, shadows stretch across the historic buildings and the city slowly begins to slow down. It is probably one of the most enchanting times to truly experience the capital.
Many visitors spend their days hopping from one monument to another, but the evening is the perfect time to discover a more authentic, romantic and peaceful side of Rome. Some places are even more beautiful after sunset.
One of the most picturesque vantage points is undoubtedly the Gianicolo. From here, you can watch the whole city slowly light up as the sun sinks behind the Roman rooftops. It is a place much loved by the Romans themselves, especially on summer evenings. Bringing something to drink and stopping for a few minutes to take in the view is one of those simple experiences that stay with you for a long time.
Ponte Sant’Angelo also has an incredible atmosphere in the evening. The lights reflecting off the Tiber, the illuminated Castel Sant’Angelo and the view of St Peter’s Dome create a unique scene, perfect for a leisurely stroll after dinner.
Trastevere, on the other hand, is the ideal neighbourhood for those looking for a livelier atmosphere. The squares gradually fill with people, the restaurants start serving dinner, and the illuminated alleyways look as though they’ve stepped straight out of an old Italian film. It’s one of the best neighbourhoods in which to lose yourself without a specific destination in mind.
For those who prefer a more elegant and quiet side of Rome, however, the area around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon becomes incredibly atmospheric in the evening. As the crowds of tourists thin out, the squares take on a much more relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
The Trevi Fountain is also well worth a visit in the evening. Going very early in the morning or late in the evening allows you to enjoy the place in much more peace and quiet than during the middle of the day.
Rome by night is not just a city to visit. It is a city to savour at a leisurely pace, letting yourself be guided by its lights, its sounds and the atmosphere that has continued to captivate travellers from all over the world for centuries.
